From the reviews

Dr. Shaena is literally the best. It’s so much more than a massage. She takes her time and listens to what you need. She can really feel what’s going on with your body and knows how to make it better. She’s well-versed in both Eastern and Western medicinal techniques to truly customize your experience.

★★★★★ — Marissa, Feb 2025

I have tried massages and cupping all around the world from Thailand, Japan, Italy, France, you name it. Even here in the Bay Area I’ve tried Qi Gong Massages, Thai Massages, cupping, acupressure, you name but… but nothing has been an experience like Wood & Water.

★★★★★ — Ryan, May 2024

I have been working with Dr. Shanna for over a year and she is a wonderful healer! We have utilized acupuncture, cupping, massage, aroma and sound therapy to help with ongoing pain I've been working through in my back and leg.

★★★★★ — Lulu, Sep 2024

Shanna is an exceptional Acupuncturist and a Cupping specialist! She is kind, sensitive to one’s needs and I have come out of her sessions feeling huge relief. I highly recommend her.

Booking hijama (wet cupping) at Wood & Water Integrative Healing Arts

Wood & Water Integrative Healing Arts comes up as a provider that offers hijama — wet cupping, where the skin is lightly punctured after suction so a small amount of blood is drawn. If you're booking hijama specifically, a few things are worth asking before you go. First, sterility is everything — a reputable practitioner uses a fresh, single-use kit (new blades and cups) for every client and follows clean, gloved technique. It's completely fair to ask how they handle this. Second, many people booking hijama want a same-gender practitioner — ask whether that can be arranged. Third, ask about aftercare and whether they observe particular days if that matters to you.

What to expect from your first cupping session

New to cupping? Here's the short version. What happens: the practitioner places cups on the skin — most often the back, shoulders, or legs — and creates suction (with a pump, or briefly with a flame for fire cupping). Cups either stay put for a few minutes (dry cupping) or are glided over oiled skin (massage cupping). A session is usually 15–45 minutes, often added to a massage or acupuncture visit. The marks: cupping leaves round, bruise-like circles that are normal and usually fade in a few days to a couple of weeks — they're discoloration from the suction, not an injury, and shouldn't really hurt. What to wear: comfortable clothing that gives access to the area being treated. Afterward: drink water, keep the area warm, and skip intense sun or a hot sauna right after.

Cupping isn't for everyone — if you're on blood thinners, pregnant, or have a skin condition or bleeding disorder, check with your doctor first, and always tell your practitioner about health concerns before a session. This page is directory information, not medical advice.
