After several weeks of appointments with Dr. James, I’ve been amazed with the acupuncture experience. It’s helped with my TMJ issues and shoulder tension. I’ve also seen tremendous improvements with my stress levels, sleep, and digestive health. The treatments are also incredibly relaxing.
I’ve been going to Birdsong since June 2021, when I used a gift certificate covering a first consultation and two follow-ups. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was anxious, it being my first acupuncture experience.
I haven't been to an acupuncturist in a long time and was a little nervous but James Shelton put you at ease right away and shows genuine interest in the reasons for the visit. He is soothing and relaxing and carefully and clearly talks you through the experience before beginning. He also checks in as you go.
What to expect from your first cupping session
New to cupping? Here's the short version. What happens: the practitioner places cups on the skin — most often the back, shoulders, or legs — and creates suction (with a pump, or briefly with a flame for fire cupping). Cups either stay put for a few minutes (dry cupping) or are glided over oiled skin (massage cupping). A session is usually 15–45 minutes, often added to a massage or acupuncture visit. The marks: cupping leaves round, bruise-like circles that are normal and usually fade in a few days to a couple of weeks — they're discoloration from the suction, not an injury, and shouldn't really hurt. What to wear: comfortable clothing that gives access to the area being treated. Afterward: drink water, keep the area warm, and skip intense sun or a hot sauna right after.
