I've been seeing John for acupuncture and cupping for three months now. He's really considerate, skillful, and patient. I came to visit him with a severe unexplained migraine and neck tension. After three treatments, I am back to normal function, enabling me to drive without dizziness and work from 9 to 5.
I have been suffering from chronic upper back pain due to long hours working on the computer everyday. I came to see Dr. Shih for acupuncture treatment. After just a few visits, I feel the pain is greatly relieved. It is quite magical! Dr. Shih has amazing skills and is friendly and patient.
Dr. John Shih is absolutely exceptional! I sought his care following a miscarriage, and through a combination of acupuncture, cupping, and Chinese herbal remedies, I have successfully become pregnant again.
I have worked with a number of acupuncturists and herbalists over the past 25 plus years. While all of them have provided a degree of benefit and relief, I have not found a clinician as competent or as thorough as Dr. Shih at the US Center for Chinese Medicine.
What to expect from your first cupping session
New to cupping? Here's the short version. What happens: the practitioner places cups on the skin — most often the back, shoulders, or legs — and creates suction (with a pump, or briefly with a flame for fire cupping). Cups either stay put for a few minutes (dry cupping) or are glided over oiled skin (massage cupping). A session is usually 15–45 minutes, often added to a massage or acupuncture visit. The marks: cupping leaves round, bruise-like circles that are normal and usually fade in a few days to a couple of weeks — they're discoloration from the suction, not an injury, and shouldn't really hurt. What to wear: comfortable clothing that gives access to the area being treated. Afterward: drink water, keep the area warm, and skip intense sun or a hot sauna right after.
