My experience at Open flow was 10/10. From the minute I walked in, there were educational books in the waiting area and the ambiance was very soothing. Shortly after being brought into the treatment room David explained to me everything he would be doing and how it would benefit me.
I went to Open Flow Acupuncture for lower back and neck pain and had a 25 minute gua sha and cupping session with David. He was kind, attentive, and made me feel really comfortable explaining everything since this was my first time ever trying gua sha and cupping.
David was great and very helpful. I did cupping with him to improve my athletic performance and release tension in my back and it worked very well. David even follows up with me after my appointment to make sure everything was going well.
When I first started acupuncture, I didn't know if it was going to work. David was able to take a logical and realistic approach to my care plan that I appreciated. I've seen David for about two years and have seen such significant progress that I followed him from Chicago to his new practice Open Flow Acupuncture.
What to expect from your first cupping session
New to cupping? Here's the short version. What happens: the practitioner places cups on the skin — most often the back, shoulders, or legs — and creates suction (with a pump, or briefly with a flame for fire cupping). Cups either stay put for a few minutes (dry cupping) or are glided over oiled skin (massage cupping). A session is usually 15–45 minutes, often added to a massage or acupuncture visit. The marks: cupping leaves round, bruise-like circles that are normal and usually fade in a few days to a couple of weeks — they're discoloration from the suction, not an injury, and shouldn't really hurt. What to wear: comfortable clothing that gives access to the area being treated. Afterward: drink water, keep the area warm, and skip intense sun or a hot sauna right after.
